Women's Boxing at Underground Gym: Breaking Stereotypes and Building Strength

Women's Boxing at Underground Gym: Breaking Stereotypes and Building Strength

Women's Boxing at Underground Gym: Breaking Stereotypes and Building Strength

I still remember my first boxing class 15 years ago.

I was the only woman in a gritty, testosterone-filled gym where the men looked at me like I'd wandered into the wrong building. The coach barely acknowledged me, and I left feeling discouraged and out of place.

That experience is exactly why our women's boxing programme at Underground Gym exists.

Boxing shouldn't be intimidating. It shouldn't feel exclusive. And it certainly shouldn't feel like a space where women don't belong.

Over the past few years, women's boxing has exploded in popularity. The success of fighters like Katie Taylor, Claressa Shields and Natasha Jonas has inspired countless women to try the sport. But many gyms haven't adapted their approach to create truly welcoming environments for female boxers.

At Underground Gym Newhaven, we've built something different.

Why Women Are Choosing Boxing

Before diving into our approach, let's address the question: why are more women turning to boxing specifically?

In my conversations with the women who join our classes, several themes consistently emerge:

Practical Self-Defence Skills

Practical self-defence skills top the list. In a world where personal safety remains a concern, learning to defend yourself creates not just physical protection but psychological reassurance. Boxing teaches awareness, distance management, and if necessary, the ability to protect yourself.

Complete Physical Conditioning

Complete physical conditioning is another major draw. Boxing develops cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, coordination, and agility simultaneously. A study in the International Journal of Sports Medicine found that regular boxing training improves aerobic capacity by up to 25% and significantly increases upper body power output (Johnson, 2019).

Stress Relief and Mental Benefits

Stress relief is perhaps the most immediately noticeable benefit. There's something uniquely cathartic about hitting pads or bags after a challenging day. The focused nature of boxing creates what psychologists call a "flow state," where everyday stresses temporarily disappear.

Community Connection

Community connection rounds out the list. The shared experience of learning something challenging creates authentic bonds between women from diverse backgrounds who might otherwise never cross paths.

Breaking Stereotypes in Combat Sports

For too long, combat sports have been dominated by outdated stereotypes that suggest women don't belong in the ring. These narratives have created barriers that many women have had to overcome simply to find their place in gyms across the country.

Challenging Traditional Narratives

The traditional narrative around women's boxing often focused on making it a "softer" version of the men's sport. We reject this approach entirely. Our programme recognises that women can be just as dedicated, skilled, and powerful as their male counterparts, whilst creating an environment that acknowledges the unique challenges and experiences women face.

Testament to Determination

Every woman who steps into our boxing classes is a testament to determination and resilience. Whether they're overcoming personal challenges, breaking family stereotypes, or simply challenging their own preconceptions about what they're capable of, each member demonstrates incredible courage.

Inspiring Stories of Empowerment

The stories that emerge from our women's boxing programme are truly inspiring. We see women who have been empowered to take up space, speak up in meetings, negotiate better terms for themselves, and approach life with a newfound confidence that extends far beyond the gym.

Our Approach: What Makes Women's Boxing at Underground Gym Different

When we developed our women's boxing programme at Underground Gym Newhaven, we didn't just create a "ladies-only" version of traditional boxing classes. We fundamentally rethought the experience from the ground up:

1. Women Teaching Women

All our women's classes are led by female coaches who understand both the technical aspects of boxing and the specific concerns women might have when starting.

This isn't about segregation—many women eventually join our mixed sessions. But having female leadership creates an entry point that feels more accessible for many beginners.

2. Technique-First Philosophy

We emphasise proper form and technical development before power or intensity. This approach not only prevents injuries but also builds confidence through competence.

New members often comment on how different this feels from "boxercise" classes they've tried elsewhere, where the focus is on exhaustion rather than skill development.

3. Progressive Skill Building

Rather than throwing newcomers into overwhelming sessions, we've developed a structured curriculum that builds skills systematically:

  • Foundation Phase: Stance, basic punches, defensive positions
  • Development Phase: Combinations, footwork, defensive movement
  • Application Phase: Partner drills, pad work, controlled technical sparring (always optional)

This methodical approach ensures everyone develops at their own pace without feeling rushed or left behind.

4. Body-Positive Environment

Boxing has tremendous body composition benefits. Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that women who participated in regular boxing training for 12 weeks saw significant improvements in body composition, with an average reduction of 4.2% in body fat percentage and notable increases in lean muscle mass (Williams, 2020).

However, we never frame these benefits in terms of appearance or weight loss. Our focus remains on function, strength, and skill—celebrating what your body can do rather than how it looks.

5. Community Building

We deliberately foster connections between members through:

  • Partner rotation during drills
  • Team challenges and exercises
  • Social events outside of training
  • Mentoring connections between experienced and newer members

The result is a supportive community where women celebrate each other's progress and provide encouragement through challenges.

The Rise of Women in Boxing

The rise of women's boxing globally has been remarkable to witness. From professional levels where women headline major cards, to grassroots participation where women are finding their way into gyms across the world, the sport is experiencing unprecedented growth.

Professional Inspiration

Professional women boxers have become powerful sources of inspiration for people at all levels. Their dedication and determination in the ring demonstrate what's possible when women are given equal opportunities to compete and excel.

Breaking Down Barriers

Each girl or woman who steps into boxing helps break down the stereotypes that have historically limited participation in combat sports. They're making a statement that boxing is for everyone, regardless of gender.

Cultural Shift

We're witnessing a cultural shift where the traditional narrative of women needing to be gentle and non-confrontational is being challenged. Women are finding power in learning to fight, even if they never intend to use those skills outside the controlled environment of training.

Common Questions and Concerns

Over the years, I've heard the same questions from women considering trying boxing. Let me address the most common ones:

"Will boxing make me bulky?"

This is perhaps the most persistent myth. The reality is that boxing develops lean, functional muscle. Without specific hypertrophy training and a caloric surplus, "bulkiness" is physiologically unlikely for most women due to hormonal differences.

What you will develop is toned, functional strength and improved body composition. Many of our members report their clothes fitting better whilst maintaining or even decreasing their weight.

"Do I need to be fit before starting?"

Absolutely not. Our progressive approach means you build fitness through training rather than requiring it as a prerequisite.

We have members who couldn't do a single push-up when they started, who are now some of our strongest boxers. The key is consistency, not starting fitness level.

"I'm worried about getting hurt."

Safety is our top priority. In beginners' classes, there is:

  • No sparring (this only happens in advanced classes and is always optional)
  • Careful partner selection and monitoring
  • Proper technique instruction to prevent injuries
  • Appropriate protective equipment

Many members are surprised by how safe boxing feels when taught properly.

"I'm not aggressive enough for boxing."

Boxing isn't about aggression—it's about technique, timing, and strategy. Some of our best boxers are naturally calm, thoughtful people who excel through precision rather than power.

Boxing actually teaches controlled application of force rather than aggression.

Real Stories: Transformations Beyond the Physical

The physical benefits of boxing are impressive, but the most meaningful changes often happen internally. Let me share a few stories from our members at Underground Gym Newhaven:

Sarah's Journey to Confidence

Sarah (42) joined us after a difficult divorce that had severely impacted her confidence. "I spent years feeling like I was taking up too much space, physically and metaphorically," she told me. "Boxing taught me that I have every right to stand my ground, to occupy space confidently. That mindset has changed everything—from how I parent to how I function at work."

Sarah's transformation demonstrates how boxing can help women find their power in all areas of life, not just in the gym.

Mei's Battle with Anxiety

Mei (25) came to us with severe anxiety that had previously prevented her from participating in group activities. "The first few classes, I was terrified," she recalls. "But the structured nature of the training and the supportive environment gradually made me comfortable. Now, not only can I handle the classes, but my general anxiety has decreased dramatically."

Mei's story shows how the controlled environment of boxing can help people overcome broader life challenges.

Denise's Age-Defying Strength

Denise (57) joined with concerns about age-related physical decline. "I was starting to notice everyday tasks getting harder—carrying groceries, climbing stairs, keeping up with my grandchildren," she explained. Six months into her boxing journey, she reports: "I'm stronger now than I was in my 30s. I have energy I'd forgotten was possible. Boxing gave me my vitality back."

These stories reflect the multidimensional benefits that extend far beyond fitness or self-defence skills. They're a testament to the transformative power of stepping outside your comfort zone and discovering what you're truly capable of.

The Mental and Emotional Benefits

Beyond the physical transformation, women's boxing provides profound mental and emotional benefits:

Building Resilience

Learning to box teaches resilience in a unique way. When you learn to take a punch (even a light one in controlled training), you develop confidence in your ability to handle whatever life throws at you. This resilience transfers to facing challenges in other areas of life.

Stress Management

The intense focus required in boxing creates a mental break from daily stresses. Many members describe boxing as their "meditation in motion"—a time when work worries, family stress, and other concerns simply fade away.

Confidence Building

There's something uniquely empowering about learning to fight. Even knowing you can defend yourself if necessary creates a confidence that permeates other areas of life. Members often report speaking up more at work, setting better boundaries in relationships, and generally feeling more empowered in their daily lives.

Goal Achievement

Boxing provides clear, measurable goals—from learning a new combination to improving your time on the bags. Achieving these goals builds a sense of accomplishment that many people have been missing from their lives.

Creating an Inclusive Environment

At Underground Gym, we're committed to creating an inclusive environment where all women feel welcome, regardless of their background, fitness level, or experience:

Diverse Community

Our members come from all walks of life—busy mums, corporate executives, students, retirees. This mix creates a rich community where women can connect across traditional social boundaries.

Flexible Scheduling

We understand that women often have complex scheduling demands. Our multiple class times per week allow for flexibility whilst maintaining consistency in training.

Supportive Atmosphere

We've worked hard to create an atmosphere where mistakes are learning opportunities, where asking questions is encouraged, and where every small improvement is celebrated.

Respectful Environment

Respect for each other and for the sport is fundamental to our approach. We maintain high standards for behaviour and ensure that everyone feels safe and supported.

  • UG FlowFit sessions improve the mobility and core strength that support boxing performance
  • Strength Circuits develop the functional strength that enhances punching power and overall resilience

This integrated approach produces well-rounded fitness that serves both boxing development and everyday life.

The Science Behind Women's Boxing

Research consistently supports the benefits of boxing training for women:

Cardiovascular Benefits

Boxing provides exceptional cardiovascular conditioning, improving heart health and endurance in ways that traditional cardio often cannot match.

Strength Development

The varied movements in boxing develop functional strength throughout the entire body, with particular emphasis on core stability and upper body power.

Coordination and Balance

Boxing significantly improves hand-eye coordination, balance, and overall body awareness—benefits that transfer to many other activities.

Mental Health Benefits

Studies show that boxing training can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression while improving overall mood and self-esteem.

Looking Forward: The Future of Women's Boxing

The future of women's boxing looks incredibly bright. As more women discover the sport and challenge traditional stereotypes, we're creating a new narrative about what women can achieve.

Growing Participation

Participation in women's boxing continues to grow at all levels, from recreational training to competitive sport. This growth is changing perceptions and creating new opportunities.

Professional Recognition

Women's professional boxing is gaining the recognition it deserves, with better pay, promotion, and media coverage creating new role models for aspiring boxers.

Cultural Impact

The cultural impact extends beyond sport, as women use boxing as a way to challenge stereotypes and assert their right to take up space in the world.

The Invitation: Find Your Power

Boxing offers women something uniquely valuable: the discovery of their own power, both physical and psychological.

In a world that often encourages women to be smaller, quieter, and less imposing, boxing provides a counterbalance—a space where strength is celebrated, where taking up space is encouraged, and where power is developed deliberately.

At Underground Gym Newhaven, we've created an environment where women of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels can explore this development safely and supportively.

Whether you're looking for fitness, self-defence skills, stress relief, or community connection, our women's boxing programme offers a path forward that thousands of women have found transformative.
