Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. Stretch your muscles, tendons and ligaments to enhance mobility and build muscle groups that allow you to become more agile, mobile and flexible in all areas of life.

Pilates is becoming a sensation thanks to its unique and effective exercises that won’t put a stress on your joints but will offer plenty of benefits. It was developed by Joseph Pilates with the aim of using exercise to improve health. If you give Pilates a try, you can expect to get stronger, particularly in the core, and to gain flexibility.

What is Pilates?

Pilates involves a series of dynamic poses that you do in a similar method to yoga. They’re all designed to strengthen your body and promote your health with an emphasis on core strength.

What do you do in Pilates Classes?

An average Pilates session will see you doing gentle dynamic poses on a mat, alongside others in your class. Much of the work you’ll do is based around bodyweight exercises, which involves stretching and moving through different poses. You can expect to move in ways that are totally different to what you’d expect in your daily life, helping you reach those less-used muscles.

Are Underground Gym Pilates Classes Suitable for Beginners?

Pilates offers a wide range of exercises that can be incorporated into a workout, ranging from gentle to more difficult. This makes it ideal for beginners, who can start off with a class that suits their pace and progress onto the more challenging exercises when they feel ready.

What do I need to bring to Pilates Sessions?

For Pilates, you should bring some water so that you don’t get dehydrated. Generally, Pilates isn’t very dynamic but that doesn’t mean you won’t get a sweat on, so bring a change of clothes too. Some instructors prefer to keep their studio nice and warm, so it would be a good idea to bring a towel to keep fresh also.

What to wear to Pilates Class

Pilates doesn’t require any specific clothing or uniform, but you’ll do well with some shorts and a loose-fitting shirt that allows for flexibility and a full range of movement.
