Muay Thai
Muay Thai is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This physical and mental discipline uses a combination of fists, elbows, knees, and shins to strike the opponent. Our class is a great way of introducing yourself to Muay Thai or for those already acquainted with this sport, expand on your current knowledge.
What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai is also referred to as the ‘art of 8 limbs’ because it relies on eight contact points: kicks, knees, elbows and fists on both sides of the body. This is one of the reasons it’s considered to be so effective, because regular boxing involves two points and martial arts like karate involve four. It’s also a very practical thing to learn, favouring hard work and building skill rather than performing ceremonies.
What do you do in Muay Thai Classes?
If you’re new, you can start with basic techniques that will concentrate on movement and rhythm to improve your balance and coordination. Classes involve lots of exercises to get fighting-fit, pad work to improve your coordination and bag work to improve your striking.
Are Underground Gym Muay Thai Classes Suitable for Beginners?
While Muay Thai may have a competitive image, training comes in all flavours and, as with a lot of combat-style classes, sparring is optional. Everyone was a beginner at some stage, which means that our instructors have a wealth of experience in building skills from scratch with accessible exercises that will teach the basics before you move onto the more impressive stuff.
What do I Need to Bring to Muay Thai Sessions?
Start with a willingness to get a sweat on because you can definitely expect to get a decent workout. So, bring a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards, as well as some water to stay hydrated. Muay Thai classes will see you training your striking, so many people bring wrist wraps for much-needed wrist support when hitting the bag. Sparring is not for everyone but if you fancy it, you might also want to bring a gumshield.
What to Wear to Muay Thai Class
Muay Thai can be quite athletic so bring loose-fitting clothing, particularly a t-shirt or tank top. Chances are you’ll also be practising your kicks, so it’s a good idea to opt for shorts instead of joggers.
We also offer Youth Muay Thai classes.
