BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport system that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting. UG BJJ, is designed to provide members with a solid foundation of Jiu-Jitsu technique. Our drills and setups offer you an opportunity to learn self-defence, grow as a competitor in this sport, and have lots of fun at the same time!

What is BJJ?

The name of Brazilian jiu-jitsu comes from the Japanese phrase ‘gentle art’, which is a poetic way to describe the martial art that has taken the world by storm. The aim of BJJ is to use leverage, pressure, positioning and timing to achieve the submission of your opponent, which is very different from striking arts and explains why it is so popular in combination with other martial arts when training for competition.

Benefits of BJJ

BJJ is an awesome way to get fit by improving both your cardio and strength. But it’s not only a workout for the body, it’s a workout for the mind as well because you’ll have to use your skill to outsmart your opponent. Combine all these features together and you’ll find that not only will it help you develop self-confidence but it will also reduce stress and probably improve your reflexes as well.

Why is BJJ so Effective?

BJJ is effective due to intelligent techniques and effective training. Techniques are based on seeking your opponent’s weaknesses and finding opportunities, so it’s possible for tricky practitioners to minimise any strength and weight advantages their opponent may have. Unlike some martial arts, BJJ has very little ceremony and that means from the first session you’ll be getting experience with important skills and techniques.

Is BJJ Good for Self Defence?

Some argue that BJJ has some weaknesses when it comes to self-defence due to the fact that it’s a grappling art. Due to this, people often combine BJJ with a striking discipline such as Muay Thai for an all-round self-defence system. However, even without additional training, BJJ by itself gives amazing confidence and will likely make someone capable of defending themselves.

Is BJJ Hard to Learn?

Your learning curve with BJJ will depend on your level of experience, but what we can promise you is that BJJ is very practical and you’ll be learning useful things from your first session. With BJJ sessions, you’ll learn by doing and get step-by-step practice of real techniques that would be effective inside or outside the gym.

What do I Need to Bring to BJJ Class?

You might have noticed that there’s specific clothing for BJJ, which is referred to as a gi and is composed of a rugged top and trousers. They’re specially designed for BJJ but you’re not always expected to have one on your first session, and some venues run both gi and no-gi sessions. If you don’t have a gi, you should wear a t-shirt and shorts or joggers. Also, remember to bring a change of clothes for afterwards.
