We ask Rene Campbell more about bodybuilding and her journey:
'Bodybuilding is a mental as well as the physical journey for each who decides to go down this path.
It certainly is a sport that encompasses your whole lifestyle and to achieve great results you need to immerse yourself fully. For me personally, it affected my outlook on life, social and personal life, sleeping patterns, training and of course diet.
I was an endurance athlete previously - spending hours a day cycling, swimming and running.
For years, I tried to maintain a body image that the media pushes onto society of being a skinny size 6-8.
*Looking back now I can see what a mental struggle this was - always believing I had to be thin to look like the photographs you see on the cover of magazines and advertisements. I was miserable and unconfident in myself. *
My journey into the world of muscle liberated me mentally. I gained strength of mind as well as strength of body. As I saw my physique change, I became more comfortable and confident with myself.
It was a revelation to understand that I didn't need to conform to the pressures of society. All I needed to do was follow what felt right for me.
"YOUR TIME IS LIMITED, SO DON'T WASTE IT LIVING SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE." - Steve Jobs
The main highlights of my competing journey were winning the UK BFF British Women's Bodybuilding title, winning the Ifbb Overall and World title and then earning Pro Status. I now get to compete with the best of the best in the World on a Pro Stage - this blows my mind when I think about it. I am humbled and in awe when I see world class athletes at events - the ones I've looked up to and been motivated by - and I think "Wow - look how far Iv come. Anything is possible".
I achieved something which seemed impossible at the start. I had many people around me - in my personal life as well as the bodybuilding circuit who said I wouldn't amount to anything. That was fuel to the fire for me and gave me motivation.
"FOLLOW YOUR HEART AND YOUR INSTINCTS. PEOPLE MAY TRY TO DISSUADE YOU FROM YOUR PASSION, BUT NO ONE CAN LIVE YOUR LIFE BUT YOU". - Olympia Dukakis
I won my Pro Status by being the first British female athlete to win the World Title - this goes down in the history books. I was told that this was impossible to achieve and that I shouldn't get my hopes up, and in fact to just give up on the idea. This reinforces my belief that whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve.
"WHATEVER THE MIND OF MAN CAN CONCEIVE AND BELIEVE; IT CAN ACHIEVE." - Napoleon Hill
Outside of the bodybuilding circuit - I am a mum of two boys. This again is something that makes me love the sport - you can still be a parent and build a physique that you're proud of. Iv met many women who even after having children, get into the gym and transform their bodies. Again, not just transforming their physique, but altering their mental strength and gaining self-confidence. This alone is a huge motivational tool for me.
This life we have is short, and many of us live with the misconception that we have all the time in the world. We put things off and come up with excuses why we can't do something.
No more excuses - get started!!'
