If you’re struggling with your motivation, or you simply want to squeeze more out of every workout you do, then one of the smartest moves you can make is to get a workout partner. In fact, having the right workout partner can often be the difference between failure and success, mediocre results and incredible results. Even if you find you work better on your own, the right workout partner can force you to tap into those extra reserves of strength and energy so that you push through a few extra reps. The right workout buddy helps you give it your all, and if you want great results then you’ve got to give it everything you’ve got: you get out, what you put in.
BENEFITS OF HAVING A GOOD WORKOUT PARTNER
1. YOU’LL FEEL MORE MOTIVATED
We all know that feeling of finishing work at 18:00 and not feeling like going to the gym. Making a plan with a friend will make us more likely to stick to our plan. We as humans don’t like letting people down, as much as we would letting ourself down. Imagine all the extra progress you would have made just over the course of the past 12 months if you'd never missed a workout!
2. WORKING OUT BECOMES MORE FUN
You can get a serious workout, without being serious – it’s okay to have fun. In fact, the more fun your workouts are, the more you’re going to look forward to and be committed to them over the long-term. There’s absolutely no doubt that the right workout partner can make your workouts more fun. Working out alone can be lonely, so just having that social contact – being able to laugh, encourage and motivate – will make them much more enjoyable.
3. COMPETITION MAKES YOU PERFORM BETTER
Most of us have at least a little competitive streak, and healthy competition is a good thing because it makes you perform better. Our instructors at Underground Gym, Portslade, Hove, have had some interesting findings on this: participants perform better when they are paired up with a workout partner who is fitter than they are. Our instructors also found that to maximise motivation your workout buddy should be a little better than you are – a challenging, yet achievable goal for you to meet. When we pair up with a partner who is fitter than you, it produces an effect known as the or simply put: not wanting to be the weakest link effect.
4. YOU'LL ALWAYS HAVE A SPOTTER
Never again will you have to approach a random person to ask them to spot you. Never again will you have to count your own reps. "You also won't have to worry about forced reps." What's a forced rep? "Let's say you're on the bench press and you want to stop at 10 because you're not sure you can make it to 11. If you have a spotter, you don't have to worry as much and you are more likely to power through the 11th, 12th, and 13th reps. Each of those little lifts will add up and make a difference." Use your spotter to keep an eye on your form as you work.
5. IT BRINGS VARIETY TO YOUR WORKOUTS
Your workout partner has different skills and knowledge than you do – you can benefit from this by the different exercises they introduce you to, the correct form, new workouts and different ways of being active. Variety is one of the key components of fun, so you’re much more likely to stick to your workouts when you can do new things.
